War between Georgia and Russia – why do we always have to support the weak side?

Why I should believe Georgia´s president ?

Until now the war between Georgia and Russia is not official, but everything is going so fast, that while you are reading this article the conflict can escalate to a real declared war – or end in peace. Currently we are only talking about a conflict in south Ossetia (sO), we are dealing with soldiers, tanks and shooting at each other like in real war.

I want to remind you quickly that sO is an autonomic republic that belonged to Georgia, where partisans made a mess. They were asking for independence for sO, but they understand independence as belonging to Russia. When the georgian army started attacking those partisans last friday, Russia declared that they would defend their own citizens in sO and sent their own troops and artillery to help those partisans to fight against Georgia. In the latest news, Russia also started attacking within Georgian territory, Georgia retreated their troops from sO and about 2000 people already died.

This conflict eclipsed the olympic opening ceremony in the media yesterday. It has been claimed that Russia chose this exact day to start the conflict because they wanted hide from world view, everybody concentrating on the Olympic Games. If this is true than their plan didn´t work – the saturday NY Times front page, where this conflict is the top story prooves it best. Also, on friday in all the biggest media like CNN or the BBC, instead of the olympic opening ceremony, this armed conflict was the top story.

But that doesn’t matter – what’s important is who is right in this conflict, and which side should I support ? It’s better not to ask this question to Lithuanians, because the answer is clear. It’s the same like with Estionia’s bronze soldier conflict; we don’t go deeper and take everything too personally. We portrait Russia as the big enemy, the aggressor, who wants to take everything in their reach. Today Georgia, tommorow Lithuania – we experienced what this means, we have to support our friends. Georgia is the victim and Russia is evil. I suspect that it is more important for us not to support Georgia, but rather to vent our anger on the russians. I.e. even if they had a war against snowmen, we would support the snowmen and blame the russians.

Unfortunately, unlike most lithuanians, I’m not so enthusiastic and will not start to compare Georgia with Lithuania, with its fight for freedom, when Russia also sent tanks there. Maybe we could have been in the same situation at that time in 1990, if we had tried to win our independence with Kaliningrad as part of our territory – it would have been at the centre of arguments, as sO is now.
Because I’m unsure in the case of sO, I can’t easily support either side. Why is it, that when sO declared its independence in 1992, Georgia forced them to remain a part of them ? Does it really belong to Georgia ? Maybe sO rather wanted to be a part of Russia. You would be surprised how much eastern Ukraine and Belarus clings to Russia. Lets not forget also that Georgia started attacking first, and they don’t try to hide that. Isn’t it a provocation to start the war ? Maybe Georga has long understood that it will be hard to stabilise this region. Neither NATO nor the EU showed a lot of enthusiasm about helping and, because of the fragile stability in the country, have closed its doors to Georgia. So Georgia could have decided to finish this argument in a radical way – provoking the big lion to start the war, and then presenting themselves to the world as the big victims, trying to seduce the western countries to help them and make Russia apologise.

On the other side there is Russia – who have always supported the sO partisans with guns and ammunition, trying to destabilize the region to prevent Georgia becoming members of NATO and the EU, something which Russia is afraid of. And the most convenient reason which I increasingly believe in – Russia wants to occupy Georgia because of their oil pipeline. South Ossetia is only the pretext to start this war. This is not about them, but just another war for oil. As Russia currently attacks the pipeline, it’s hard to believe otherwise. Russia is using the old tested and tried method, which the soviet union used all the time when they occupied foreign countries – declare they are bringing peace.

And finally I mean …they are russians… we should not try to find a logical explanation for what they are doing, because they always seem to come up with violent solutions to their problems.

This is an analysis of the situation, the truth will hopefully come out later. Now we can watch the growing number of deaths and the destruction in Georgia. And at the same time how all the world doesn’t give a shit about what’s happening here. The USA has already played with Isreal, Libanon and Iraq. Why shouldn’t they let someone else play too ? Georgea is now in a desperate situation, because they can’t declare war on Russia. With US backing, this would mean that America is at war against Russia, implying a third world war scenario which they could never want.

If the world doesn’t move a finger to help Georgia – what can you expect from Lithuania ? Off course I’m not saying that we should react as some lithuanian Nazis want – declare war against Russia and start sending our troops to Georgia. But we are a member of NATO and the EU, so we can use our voice. Our past support means that we share some responsibility in this, but in truth we never cared about Georgia. All that support was about ourselves, we tried to play the role of a regional leader that can represent new EU partners – we were proud of ourselves and felt more important. At the time, supporting Georgia was useful, now they will not get any support from our side. What we can do is continue laughing at president Valdas Adamkus, who, when Russia started attacking Georgia, declared that this creates new questions.
Oh – I almost forgot – our foreign minister Petras Vaitiekunas went to Georgia to watch the situation. Dear Mr. Vaitiekunas, don’t you think it’s better to be silent than to be silent and peacefully watch Georgeans dying ?

Interesting point of view. I was amused when Adamkus told that Lithuania supports Georgia, it seemed that it was something he had to do, he had to react this way since we are in NATO, however, it all sounded a bit superficial, I mean what really can us lithuanians do to stop that violence in Georgia? Nothing! We won’t go to Georgia, because, as you said, US can’t afford another war.

Also, it reminded me when Lithuanian government officials announced that they support war in Iraq when US declared war on that country. Oh and how stupid was that? After that kind of urgent decision EU officials were more than upset that immature Lithuanian gov. instead of being part of EU family, makes such decisions without counseling EU.

In the end, we all want peace during Olympic games, but not everyone share the same definition of word ‘peace’. US wanted peace and went on crusade against ‘Iraqi terrorists’. Since Medvedev stepped up to Russia’s president post, I think Putin wanted to make sure that everyone in the world knows that Russia is till strong and dangerous super state even with Putin as Prime Minister and, as all we know, Medvedev being his puppet.

Russia does not need the oil that lies in Georgia. It is not a secret that it has got plenty of it. Russia does not need any of the Baltic countries either or Poland, or Ukraine.

This is just an illness of small countries that want to look big. If you were bright you would be trying to have good relationships with Russia instead of spoiling them more and more.

Long time ago Russia saved the world from Nazis and everybody was happy and grateful then and now it turns out that Russia occupied all these countries – would you prefer to be killed by Nazis instead?

It is US and Georgia’s violent plan that they were working on for more then 2 years to attack South Ossetia in order to come closer to Russia and they have chosen the day when the Olympic games were opening and all the world’s attention was to the Games.

We all know very well that the truth always comes up and I just hope that the aggressors will get punishment.

  3. nerusas says:

Marina, your comment is absolutely BULLSHIT ! NOT Russia peoples, but Russian’s politics(especially V.Putin) are fuc*ing idiots, and pro-sovietics regime ! They must be jailed!!! Georgia is peacfull country.

You said that Baltic countires is not important for russia…… if not, so why they warning them when Lithuainia and other baltics support georgia ???
    ……

  4. Marina says:

First of all only sick people can support this kind of violence.
Secondly I am not sure if Russia was saying anything to the Baltic countries re their support towards Georgia but even if it did the only reason for that will be a warning not to put their noses where they do not belong.
If you can tell me a reason why Russia needs Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, such a ”powerfull and significant” union, I would be very grateful to you.
And God bless Russia and Putin is the most noble politician. And if you want to talk about politicians – look around, Lithuanian politicians are any good? What do they do for the people to make their lives better? Same with Latvia. As far as I am concerned things in Lithuania are not as bad as in Latvia.
Well, and Georgia is not a peacful country at all, the country that is starting the war cannot be called peaceful, there is obviously smth wrong with you if you think so.

Kosovo has around 2 million people 90% Albanian.
N.Mirtovica (Region) has 60 000 people 90% Serbian (Self Governed and Autonom).
Georgia has around 4 million people 90% Georgian.
S.Ossetia (Region) has 70000 people 90% Ossetian (Self Governed and Autonom).
If Kosovo will invade N.Mitrovica will face the Mighty Serbian Army.
Kosovars are not Making this mistake because they “know very well their self and the enemy”.
Georgian didn’t know “their self and the enemy” and were succumbed.

  6. churchill says:

Marina i mean not georgian oil but pipeline in Georgia, that brings oil from Caspia sea to west country. Check this one http://tinyurl.com/622xhb

  7. Jane says:

Article summary that has been written by anonymous Lithuanian author:

Lithuania hates Russia so much, “We portrait Russia as the big enemy..”
Lithuania will always be against Russia doesn’t matter what, “… even if they had a war against snowmen, we would support the snowmen and blame the Russians”.
Lithuania doesn’t care about who is right and who is wrong or what the reason of conflict is. The goal is to make Russia look bad and escalate the conflict; … “in truth we never cared about Georgia. All that support was about ourselves … we are a member of NATO…” So basically it says that Lithuania has changed its ownership! Now Lithuanians do or say whatever it takes to please America.
Lithuania has never had self-respect or dignity, why care about it now? It’s really doesn’t matter; they made it to NATO …”we were proud of ourselves and felt more important.”
Now Lithuania can bark on elephant but still keep a significant distance. It’s only done in order to attract attention of powerful countries that might influence Russia – “And at the same time how all the world doesn’t give a shit about what’s happening here?”
However, Lithuania has chosen not to participate in the war saying that Lithuania is a small country with not enough power and resources. So they prefer to keep its ass safe but at the same time they try to provoke other countries – “If the world doesn’t move a finger to help Georgia – what can you expect from Lithuania?” Well, maybe the answer on this question is that Lithuania needs to SHUT UP and don’t be ridicules. That’s already enough shame for Lithuania, thanks to this anonymous writer =)
But at least, he or she accepts a fact that Russia didn’t start the war, Georgia did!

P.S. Lithuanians shouldn’t think that America cares about them or wants to know what they think, America wants to use you and that the reason why you’re in NATO, to give your voice to America when it says so! Aren’t Americans smart? America is great and resourceful country but Lithuania is nobody. Accept this fact!

  8. Marina says:

    Churchill,
Ok, the pipeline, but it changes nothing from what I’ve said before.
You cannot admit that Russia is a powerful country and is rising up again. And the ones who are making all these false stories up are going to suffer and only because of their own stubbornness and stupidity.

  9. nerusas to MARINA says:

Hey Marina…. :D Im not talking about Lithuanian politics because there is a different talk about it… (but that was a result of baltic countires occupation of russia… ) PUTIN IS PEDERAST ! :D USA , NATO, an EUROPE will isolate Russia :P RUSSIA NEED TO CHANGE THEIR POLITICS ! After that the result will be PEACE, FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY in wolrd. Burn in hell sovietic regime!

And at the end of all – WHY DO YOU THINK ALL EUROPE AND USA support Georgia ?? Think about it. Russia deserve changes :)

  10. churchill says:

nerusas Yeah only USA, China and half Africa need to change their politics. Then maybe will be peace in the world, but not we will have new agresiors

  11. Marina says:

It will be better for everyone if you understand that Russia is Russia. And no-one can ever change it. Little countries for Russia are like little fish for a whale. They could argue and debate as much as they want to but all the time they are going to swim in the same direction as the whale. Just to stay alive. The whale will never hurt them. He will never notice them until they will start to try and bite him. These little harmless bites are not painful or destructive but it could make the whale annoyed and he will start to eat these small fish. He will not bring him any satisfaction or pleasure. They were just bothering him too much. So good luck, loosers. If you want to be that annoying fish, it is your choice.

P.S. Nerusas, if Putin is pederast then he is fucking you every single night.

  12. nerusas says:

    to MARINA :

Putin fuck Medvedev all the time in all holes :D But if I ever will met him Putin will turned from pederast to impotent(mind and biological ) .

About that small fish and etc. :
doesnt matter where that ‘fishes’ swim, they are in EUROPIAN UNION AND NATO ! the gerogia will be too ! then RUSSIA will be in silence, if not it will be destroyed and isolated(that threat is now too )

The sentense ” RUSSIA IS RUSSIA ” means RUSSIA is absolutely NOTHING like a shit :D A big old same shit that was been long long time ago before soviet union collapsed :P

So, Marina, take a deep breath and wait until russia will be “jailed” :D

p.s: Marina “don’t take it in mind – take it in your mouth” ^^ sry.

  13. Marina says:

Nerusas, your thoughts are confirming again how stupid Lithuanin nation is.
Go fishing and forget about politics, you cannot express yourself in a civilized manner anyway.

  14. Gabriele says:

but it is stupid to say that Lithuanian nation is stupid, if nerusas says something stupid, isn’t it? :) )))

  15. Marina says:

Lithuanian nation is stupid enough without nerusas saying anything.

  16. Frank says:

    Guys,
you are so pityful and ridiculous in your ineradicable hate of Russia, that I can’t believe my eyes: you are still alive! :) ) The earlier you get some psychosomatic desease the better — because only some such decisive argument can dissolve your negative emotions.
You have to understand: if you feel angry, it has nothing to do with Russia. Russia is far away from you long ago. All your hate originates from your own souls. And, perhaps, not without a help of american influence on your governments. Like everywhere in Europe, tho.
    Take care,
    Frank
